You are cordially invited... By Laurie Velett
When I open my mailbox, either snail mail or e-mail, and find an invitation to a party or event, I instantly feel happy and excited about the opportunity to see good friends in a relaxed setting and enjoy time together.
In that vein, please consider this your invitation to join the MWGA Rules Committee! We go to great places (the outstanding golf courses that Minnesota has to offer), see old friends and make new ones, and invariably learn something new about the Rules of Golf. There's even a free lunch!
I've been part of the Rules Committee for several years now, and I've come to realize that there are some myths about the committee that need to be dispelled.
Myth #1 You need to be a rules expert. The fact is you are never out there alone. We are lucky to have an outstanding rules consultant in Bill Homeyer, who is always available by radio to answer questions and make rulings. In addition, training is available to increase your knowledge and help you feel more comfortable with the Rules of Golf. The committee conducts a rules clinic each spring. Also, the MWGA will reimburse your costs to attend a one- or two-day workshop conducted locally by the MGA, or the 4-day workshop that the USGA conducts around the country (including one in Minnesota every few years).
Myth #2 The time commitment is too much. All we ask is for two shifts throughout the summer from Limited Rules Officials, and you get to pick which days. Two of the events are half-day shotgun tournaments, so you'll be done by lunch. We can be as flexible as you need us to be, and we are grateful for any time you can lend.
Myth #3 I'll be stuck in one spot all day and will get bored. There are a variety of assignments at each tournament. Some people are starters, who make sure each group gets started off their first tee. Other people handle scoring at the end of play. You might be assigned to an area of the course where hazards provide greater need for rulings. Most likely, you will do two or three of these things throughout the day. We also have officials walk along with every group in the two junior tournaments, to make rulings when necessary or to help the girls watch their balls and to provide radio contact with the rules consultant.
Myth #4 I won't get to play the tournaments myself anymore. As mentioned before, you sign up for the days and events that work best for you, so you can still keep time open for the tournaments that you like to play in yourself. And if you've cut back on your own tournament play, you can still enjoy the excitement of a championship by joining the Rules Committee.
If this invitation has persuaded you to consider this wonderful volunteer opportunity, please RSVP by contacting Marta Groess (m.groess@att.net) or Paula Lutz (paula@mngolf.org) for more information. We would love to have you join the party!
